November 17-19, 2023

MUD WATER IV is an evening-length live performance premiering at Dance Mission Theater in San Francisco this November 17, 18 and 19. A futuristic portrayal of the near-extinction of turfing, presented in the style of a documentary, the show combines dance, storytelling and projected motion graphics. In the year 2032, the last turfers on earth find their world overrun by AI, which have grown massive after many years of feeding on global social media dance trends. In their final battle to preserve the roots of their culture and artform, the remaining turfers attempt to teach an AI named Dance-GPT all about what turfing is.

Co-presented by Dance Mission Theater, this project is made possible with support from the Gerbode Foundation, Rainin Foundation, and Dancer’s Group.

"The artist as activist is as old as time and D.I.R.T. presents the work of artists that are addressing local/global challenges through their creative process. There are many ways that an artist may address such challenges - be it from the explicit content of their choreography, to looking at who has a voice, to their process." -Dance Mission

We would like to give thanks to the Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation, Left Tilt Fund, CA$H Grant, and Zellerbach Family Foundation for providing us with the grants necessary to continue development. Mud Water's weekend premiere at the Dance Mission Theater's D.I.R.T Festival was so well received (it sold out THREE shows) that the group has decided to continue developing the project into a full (evening) length piece! We are currently working on gathering enough funding to produce one show (including compensation for all cast members and collaborators) before we can resume rehearsals. To help support this project, you can make a contribution by clicking here. Or email us at info@mudwatertheatre.com to find out more about making a tax-deductible donation.

We have a new collaborator on board - Disasterpeace! Named by Rolling Stone as one of the "10 New Artists You Need to Know," Disasterpeace, otherwise known as Rich Vreeland, is an incredible Berkeley-based music composer who will be working with us on scoring some of the music for our project.

You can check out some of his past releases (such as his highly acclaimed scores for the movie "It Follows" as well as the award-winning game "Fez") on his website
